Pigmentation/Melasma

While immediate effects of the sun are often deceptively pleasant, the long term effects are damaging and have become so commonplace that most people consider them to be natural aging.  Premature aging can be seen with an increase in freckles, brown spots, redness and veins, wrinkles, dehydrated and dull skin.  In lighter skin, a tan only provides an SPF of about 2, so the increase in melanin from a tan is not really beneficial in protecting the skin which most clients don’t realize.  Sun damage is a skin disease caused by the sun, not a condition caused by time. The truth is 80% of photo-damage is done by the age of 18.  Melasma is a brown discolouration that can appear on the cheeks, the forehead and upper lip and it is hard to camouflage with most makeup.

No one knows what causes melasma, there is no known cure for it and it can reoccur. Hormones (pregnancy mask), sun exposure and trauma are thought to trigger it.  Harsh chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and ablative lasers can cause “trauma” to the area and can actually make melasma worse. We don’t recommend the use of Hydroquinone as it makes the pigmentation worse when one stops using it. However, with proper home care and professional treatments melasma can be dramatically reduced. Home care is extremely important with this condition.
